Some days you just don't want to be who you are...
Days like that, a Venetian costume mask is just the thing...or a Pocahontas costume, or your belly dancing bra and jangly ankle bracelet.

Why do adults lose the ability to play? or to pretend?

make believe and reality are really so very much entwined...

hard to know what is the truth. Only the heart can really judge and for most of us, our heart is no longer pure and whole. Nothing a little coloring outside the lines can't fix...or a giant blanket fort...or a game of hide and go seek...

So, I have finally decided to allow myself the title 'Artist'.  I have been convinced for years...and years...(yeah, I'm old) that artists were 'them' and I wasn't one of 'them'.  Artists were cool. Artists were self assured.  Artists knew they were good.

Well, I certainly am not 'cool'. The cool kids at school eons ago drove that home.  i can pull off a sort of bohemian chic on a good hair day. But that is the best I can manage.

And I have never been self assured...although Therapy and margaritas help.

Lastly, knowing I was good.  Huh. Nope. The thought never really occurred to me. Friends and relatives like realistic.  I don't do realistic.  I do frantic lines and dramatic colors.  My Mommy always just shook her head.  Husband too.  "That's nice, Bren. It is so colorful."  And I believed it...I wasn't 'good'...I was 'nice and colorful'.  So, I stopped painting. Stopped drawing.

But then the perfect storm happened and life got immensely f'ed up...and the turbulence re awoke the sleeping line beastie in me and the art started again without my permission or participation. Bill envelopes and note pads were filled with lines and textures.  One day, my husband said "I miss your art".  And I thought, so do I.  So here I am to revitalize it and work it.  Older, no more cooler, but ready to face criticism and learn.
